NTU YEAR 2 SEM 2
Nanyang Technological University 2017.
Biological Sciences Year 2, Semester 2.
Hi guys, although I have fewer subjects this time round.. highly doubt that I will be able to score at all. LOL. Well... just hope that my cgpa don't drop too much :/ Anyway, a summary of what I've took this semester. Hope it helps!
1.) BS2004 Molecular & Cell Biology II
There're only lectures and tutorials for this module. Lectures are all recorded. For this module, I feel that you guys have to take it because it's like the prerequisite for many year 3/4 modules. It's like a must. There are 2 mid terms, which consist of MCQ & open ended questions. For the final exam, it consists of MCQ and 4 open ended questions (consist of sub parts). These open ended questions include a part where you will have to describe the steps of the experiments (eg how do we extract this protein out), you can refer to the past year papers (PYP 2016/2017) for more examples. There are also discussion questions given out during some of the lectures. You are suppose to form your own groups during these lectures, complete the discussion questions given by the prof and he will then mark and return back the papers (one group one paper). The answers will not be posted in the NTULearn, so if you want to score, you know what to do. However, the results of the discussion questions (marks or whatsoever) does not constitute to your final grade but it may hold the key in answering some of the open ended questions in the final exam.
2.) BS2007 Immunology

2.) BS2007 Immunology
There're lectures, tutorials and labs for this module. Lectures are all recorded. It's pretty content heavy for this module. The answers are not direct and you will have to really understand the content in order to score. I personally wouldn't recommend this module if you have a rather heavy workload for the semester. Too tiring to memorize so many stuff and its not that easy to score either. For the practicals, there will be a practical lesson (last lesson), purely just going through the concepts of the instrument eg... you will not see the results of your practical work.. there's no hands-on at the last practical, just the prof going through the slides eg.. There is a 10% home assignment (by your own), whereby you just have to answer those questions given and submit it hardcopy. For finals, its purely MCQ, with more than one correct answer.
3.) BS2008 Experimental Molecular & Cell Biology (core)
There're lectures, tutorials and labs for this module as well. Lectures are all recorded, and there may not be tutorials every week. There is only like 4 practical lessons too. For the practicals, you will mainly be exposed to different lab techniques. No lab report required. However, for this, there's a 40% CA written assignment. You have to write an essay (like a report) of around 3,000 ++ words (excluding the references), there will be guidelines to follow. The remaining 60% will come from the finals. This module wasn't as draining as the prof gave us tips (what might come out for the finals) during the last lecture. The slides for the final lecture will not be uploaded but you can take pictures of the slides. The finals is made up of MCQ and open ended questions (if I'm not wrong?).
4.) BS20012 Genetics & Genomics (core)
I personally feel that this is another killer module.. LOL. The mid sem test for this module is like shit. I mean I totally flunk that paper for sure. To me right, this is another content heavy module whereby you don't know which part to study/whether it's coming out or not. Like clueless kind.. Its too much of a content if one were to memorize everything, but I personally dk which part seems right to memorize either. There is no practicals for this module, just lectures and tutorials. The tutorials is held in the LT (mass tutorials)- and it's recorded as well. The mid semester test mainly tests on your mathematics and problem solving skills, not much of a memorization , more of understanding and solving... The finals have lesser calculation as compared to the mid semester (maybe coz many of us scored badly? idk) and consist of MCQ only.

4.) HW0228 Scientific Communication II (core)
This is a 2AU module (unlike the rest) & it involves an individual and group assignment. For the individual assignment, you will just have to critique a given paper and then submit both hard and soft copy to the tutor (the tutor will guide the steps to do a critique, so not to worry). For the group assignment, members have to conduct either a survey/experiment and come up with a scientific report, whereby you guys have to present the findings (presentation using power point slides) to the class at the final week of the module. Do note that you guys have to keep within the time limit stated in the course guide for each individual presenter! Marks will be deducted if you exceed the time limit (but then again, I think it depends on the tutor also).
CA: (85%):
1. Critique (individual): 30%
2. Scientific report (group): 40%
3. Project presentation (individual): 15%
Class Participation (15%)
There is no end-of-semester exam for this module.
